Brown, Dan. The Da Vinci Code. New York, A Disicion of Random House, Inc. 2003. Print.

"If you are going through hell, keep going." - Winston Churchill

Perseverance: The strength, or ability to make ones way through something of difficulty. Perseverance is a mental attribute that allows not give up on accomplishing a feat no matter how much work, or hard the goal is.

Perseverance is shown in the short story "Just Lather, That's All". The character that shows the most perseverance is the barber. During the story, the barber is faced with the problem of whether or not to kill the captain. "Damn him for coming, because I'm a revolutionary and not a murderer. And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! What the devil!" (Tellez126) During this part of the story, the barber is debating to himself about to kill the captain, or not. He perseveres through the tough decision and decides not to kill him.

"Wincing in pain, he summoned all of his faculties and strength. The desperate task before him, he knew, would require every remaining second of his life." (Brown6)

When Jacques Sauniere was dying, his instinct was to "...pass on the secret." (Brown5). His perseverance lead him to find a way to keep the secret alive. The quotation above relates to this perfectly, because Sauniere is definitely going through hell in attempt to save the secret, and he keeps going. This tells me that the "secret" mention in the story must be VERY important, this could be a foreshadowing tactic the author has made. Also, throughout the book, you are thinking of what the important secret could be, and thus creates suspense for the reader when different people are trying to find it.
